The Shapton 500 is a medium grit that quickly sharpens dull knives, tools and razors. You do not have to soak this stone in water before using it, just splash on a little water and start sharpening. There are three reasons Shapton Stones work so well. First, Shapton carefully grades the particle size of each grit. Second, Shapton stones have a very high density of those particles. Third, the key aspect of Shapton Glass Stones is the high degree of uniformity in the distribution of the particles. The even particle distribution results in fast honing at every grit level.
